You’re not out of control. You’re just on autopilot.

There's a moment just before you reach for the thing you promised yourself you wouldn't.

The snack. The glass of wine. The phone. The "five minutes" that becomes an hour.

Usually we only notice after we've done it: "Why did I do that? I need more discipline."

But what if the problem isn't discipline? What if you're just missing the gap between the trigger and the response?

That gap is where everything changes. I use a simple four-step process with clients - STOP.

S - Spot it. Before you reach for the snack, pause. What's going on right now? Hungry? Tired? Stressed? Bored? Or just habit - you're in the kitchen because it's "that time"? No judgement, just notice.

T - Take a breath. One slow breath. Drop your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. That's the whole gap you need.

O - Observe what you need. "What do I actually need right now?" Food? A break? Fresh air? Bed? Or - genuinely - the snack. That's useful information too.

P - Pick your next step. Not the "perfect" choice. Your choice. You might still have the wine. You might make tea instead. Either way, you chose - and that's the skill. Not perfect eating. Not willpower. The ability to interrupt autopilot and decide.

Let's make healthy simple

  1. Next time you're about to do something you might regret, don't say "I mustn't"

  2. Just STOP: Spot → Take a breath → Observe → Pick

  3. You might make the same choice anyway - that's fine

  4. Each time you practise the gap, you build self-awareness, and ultimately self-trust
